AliExpress vs Taobao through Superbuy: which is cheaper, and when?

Quick answer: AliExpress is Alibaba's international store: English, direct shipping and, in the EU since July 2026, prices labelled as including duties and VAT. Taobao through Superbuy usually has lower item prices and far more choice, but you pay international shipping separately. For one or two cheap items AliExpress often wins; for a multi-shop haul, Superbuy usually does.

How the two compare on price, shipping, duty and choice, with a rule of thumb for each.

AliExpress and Taobao: same owner, different jobs

Both belong to Alibaba. Taobao serves shoppers inside China; AliExpress sells to the rest of the world in local languages and currencies, with shipping built in. Many AliExpress sellers are also Taobao or 1688 sellers, and prices are typically higher on AliExpress to cover international shipping and marketing.

A rule of thumb

For one or two small, cheap items, AliExpress is usually cheaper overall, because a Superbuy parcel's first weight step (CN¥320 for 500 g on Superbuy's UPS Economy example) would outweigh the savings. Once you're buying several items, heavier items or things AliExpress doesn't carry, consolidating through Superbuy tends to win: extra 500 g steps on that example line cost CN¥50 each.

Verdict: small and simple, AliExpress. Big, varied or Taobao-only, Superbuy.

What changed in the EU in 2026

Since 1 July 2026 the EU charges €3 duty per product type on low-value parcels. AliExpress said its listings would carry a "price includes duties and VAT" label where applicable, and major platforms have shifted more stock into EU warehouses, which avoids the per-parcel duty. For Superbuy parcels, the duty applies to your consolidated parcel; see our Germany and France examples.

And in the US?

US duty applies to every parcel from China since May 2025, whether it comes from AliExpress, a seller or an agent. Platforms that stock US warehouses can sell without a per-parcel duty at your door; Superbuy parcels pay duty on the line or on delivery.

A quick price comparison

Imagine three items: a CN¥40 phone case, a CN¥90 T-shirt and a CN¥180 hoodie. On Taobao that's CN¥310 before shipping; through Superbuy, a parcel around 1.2 kg on the UPS Economy example line costs CN¥320 + 2 × CN¥50 + CN¥38 = CN¥458, before duty. If the same three items total well above CN¥770 on AliExpress with shipping, Superbuy wins; if they're below, AliExpress does. Real numbers vary by line and country, which is why running both quotes matters.

Quality and returns

AliExpress offers platform buyer protection and returns on many items, which is simpler than returning from a Chinese warehouse. Superbuy's advantage is inspection before international shipping: you see the item and can reject it while it's still in China.

AliExpress FAQ

Is AliExpress cheaper than Taobao?

For one or two cheap items, usually yes, because a Superbuy parcel's first 500 g step costs CN¥320 on its UPS Economy example. Taobao item prices are lower, though, and each extra 500 g on that line is only CN¥50. In our three-item example, CN¥310 of Taobao items plus CN¥458 shipping came to about CN¥768 before duty. For bigger, varied hauls, Taobao through Superbuy tends to win.

Are AliExpress and Taobao the same company?

Both are owned by Alibaba Group, but they do different jobs. Taobao sells to shoppers inside China at domestic prices, while AliExpress sells to the rest of the world in local languages and currencies with shipping built in. Many sellers list on both, which is why AliExpress prices tend to be higher. Think of AliExpress as the export shop window for similar goods.

Does AliExpress include EU duty in prices?

AliExpress said that after the EU's 1 July 2026 change, which added €3 duty per product type on low-value parcels, its listings would carry a "price includes duties and VAT" label where applicable. Superbuy parcels instead pay duty on the consolidated parcel, either on a tax-inclusive line or at delivery. Look for that label before comparing totals.

Can Superbuy buy from AliExpress?

There's little point. AliExpress already ships internationally with English listings and buyer protection, so an agent would only add a fee and an extra shipping leg. Superbuy is built for Chinese domestic platforms such as Taobao, Tmall, JD and 1688, where it charges a CN¥0 purchasing fee. Buy AliExpress items directly and use Superbuy for the platforms that don't ship abroad.

Which has better buyer protection?

They protect you differently. AliExpress offers platform buyer protection and returns on many items, which is easier than sending something back from China. Superbuy's strength is warehouse QC photos before international shipping, so you can reject a wrong item while it's still in China. If easy returns matter most, choose AliExpress; if checking before shipping matters, choose Superbuy.

Do I pay US duty on AliExpress orders?

Yes. Since May 2025, US duty applies to every parcel from China, whether it comes from AliExpress, an individual seller or an agent like Superbuy. Items that platforms have already stocked in US warehouses avoid a per-parcel duty at your door. Superbuy parcels pay duty on the shipping line or on delivery, so add it to any price comparison before you decide.

Is AliExpress an agent like Superbuy?

No. AliExpress is a marketplace: sellers list goods and ship them to you internationally. Superbuy is a shopping agent that buys from Chinese domestic sites such as Taobao and 1688 for you, stores the items, sends QC photos and ships one consolidated parcel. Use AliExpress for direct cross-border shopping and Superbuy when the item only exists on domestic Chinese platforms.

What is AliExpress Choice?

Choice is AliExpress's programme of items with faster delivery and free-shipping thresholds. For small orders it competes directly with agent consolidation, because Superbuy's first weight step costs CN¥320 for 500 g on its UPS Economy example. If your basket qualifies for Choice shipping and the items exist there, compare that total against a Superbuy quote before choosing.

Can I find AliExpress items on Taobao?

Often, since many sellers list on AliExpress, Taobao and 1688 at once, with lower prices on the domestic sites. Search Taobao with a Chinese description or use image search, then confirm materials and sizes match. Our three-item example cost CN¥310 on Taobao before shipping. Compare the landed cost, including shipping and duty, before switching from AliExpress.

Which is faster, AliExpress or Superbuy?

AliExpress, usually, especially when items ship from local or regional warehouses, which also avoid the EU's €3 per-product-type duty at your door. Superbuy adds seller-to-warehouse delivery, QC photos and consolidation before the international leg even starts. If you need something within days, buy it on AliExpress; choose Superbuy when price and choice matter more than speed.

Is it worth using Superbuy for just one item?

Rarely. On Superbuy's UPS Economy example the first 500 g costs CN¥320, so a single small item carries almost all of that charge alone, while extra 500 g steps cost only CN¥50. AliExpress or a local shop usually wins for one cheap piece. Save Superbuy for when you can group several items, or for things AliExpress doesn't sell.
